Domaine Cazilhac is a large Maison de Vigneron (Wine Maker's House) situated in the middle of the village of Ferrals les Corbieres. The first floor Apartment was, at one time,  the owner's apartment, she was Germaine Simone Cazilhac who inherited the domaine from her parents; the apartment reflected her status - the rooms are huge. Carefully restored by ourselves, all the beams have been revealed and the original ambiance returned with the use of antique French furniture from the appropriate era.

The Apartment has a huge, elegant bedroom complete with ciel de lit (canopied bed) and beautiful antique furniture. As the summers are extremely hot, this room has been fitted with air conditioning. The lounge has a gorgeous Juliet balcony and a canopied daybed plus other  beautiful antique furniture, and  a tv from which you can access Netflix & Amazon Prime free. The day bed in the lounge has linen stored in the buffet cupboard should you wish to use it as a single bed. The kitchen/dining room, again a large room, has a typical Landocienne fireplace with a feature wood burning stove. The kitchen retains the ambiance of the era but is very well equipped and, with its table seating up to eight,  provides a very special place to taste the foods of the region with friends and family. The Apartment has wi fi.

The Apartment has a small, private courtyard in front of the house on the ground floor, this is for guests to use only and has a table and chairs and recliners so you can eat and relax in the sun. It also has a garden which we are re-wilding, just 10 minutes walk from the house, there you can sit on the sun loungers provided amid the apricot, olive, lemon, fig and quince trees, in front of the river and next to our wildflower meadow - bliss.

The Apartment is accessed via a private spiral staircase which is in the garage. The garage  was once the access to the barns and stables of the Domaine and would have been used by the horses and carts that transported the grapes for processing in the huge barns behind the house. The garage can be used by guests and, as it has huge lockable doors, it is a safe and convenient place to leave a vehicle.

As Germaine had no children the house was inherited by the Ledogar family who

were related to her via her mother. Simone's gravestone, shown below shares a

space with Maurice Wargnies, perhaps she was re-married or formed another

relationship

We are currently researching the owners of the Domaine. Built in approximately 1880, probably by the father of Francoise Cazilhac it was inherited by his only child, Germaine Simone Cazilhac. We know that Germaine was born in 1917, and that she was related, through her mother,  to the Ledogar family who lived with her in the house when her parents died and who, from the 1960's raised their children here. The Ledogars owned and managed vineyards and used the massive barns, at the back of the house, to process the grapes as had Germaine's father. Ledogars still own vineyards and produce wine today.

When renovating walls in  the entrance to the gite, in the garage, I came upon a bricked up niche, in the niche was part of a rosary wrapped up in pink paper dated July 1883 - I put a photo of this on the village facebook page and Mr Joseph Ledogar came to see it, it obviously meant a lot to him so I gave it to him. He is in the old photo on the right, dated about 1969, holding his son Claude on the back of the donkey whilst Mr Joseph Ledogar senior holds the donkey's bridle.

Three generations of Ledogars

     Joseph, Joseph & Claude *

* Joseph Snr is now deceased, Joseph Jnr still lives in the village. Claude runs a successful building business based in the village whilst his cousins still make wine at Domaine Ledogar.
